Frequently Asked Questions

The chiropractic care in our office is an integrated approach where your skeletal (primarily your spine) and muscular system are both evaluated and treated. It is important to us that we not only address any spinal misalignments that you have, but also address the muscles that connect to the spine. Our treatments are individualized to each patient’s need. We may treat the spine and extremities by using manual and/or instrument adjustments, physiotherapies, therapeutic exercises, and stretches. The doctors are always striving to inspire others to achieve maximum health for balance and wellness and prevent future spinal problems.

The initial visit will take approximately one hour. This enables us to perform a complete health history and thorough physical examination to better understand your area(s) of complaint. After the initial visit, treatments usually last about 30 minutes.

This statement comes up frequently when the topic of chiropractic is discussed. It is only partially true. You only have to continue going to the chiropractor as long as you wish to maintain the health of your neuromusculoskeletal system. Going to a chiropractor is much like going to the dentist, exercising at a gym, or eating a healthy diet. As long as you keep it up, you continue to enjoy the benefits.

It is important to remember that, just like your teeth, your spine experiences normal wear and tear as you walk, drive, sit, lift, sleep, and bend. Routine chiropractic care can help you feel better, move with more freedom, and stay healthier throughout your lifetime. Although you can enjoy the benefits of chiropractic care even if you receive care for a short time, the real benefits come into play when you make chiropractic care a part of your wellness lifestyle.

Subluxations are improper motion or position of the moving bones of the spine that can interfere with the vital exchange (from the brain, down the spinal cord and out to every organ and tissue) by irritating nerves and compromising the function of affected organs and tissues.

There are three basic causes of subluxations: physical, emotional, and chemical. Physical causes could include slips and falls, accidents, repetitive motions, poor posture and improper lifting. Emotions such as grief, anger and fear can cause subluxations. Chemical causes could include alcohol, drugs, pollution and poor diet.
Chiropractic adjustments usually involve a quick thrust that helps add motion to spinal joints that are not moving right. Some methods use the doctor’s hands, an instrument, a special table or the force of gravity. There are many ways to adjust the spine.
That sound is not your spine “cracking” or “popping” like most people think. Lubricating fluids separate the bones of each spinal joint. Some adjusting methods can produce a sound when the gas and fluids in the joint shift. It’s like opening a soda can or removing a suction cup. The sound is interesting, but is not a guide to the quality or value of the adjustment.
No. Some people can make their joints “pop,” but that’s not an adjustment! Worse, damage can occur by mobilizing a joint with weakened muscles and ligaments. When you crack your back you may be relieving the tension for a little while. Do you notice how it keeps coming back? That is because you are not giving yourself a specific chiropractic adjustment. Adjustments are specific and take years to master. Even your chiropractor must consult a colleague for an adjustment to benefit from chiropractic care.
Even today’s “natural” childbirth methods can affect an infant’s spine. Preliminary studies suggest that colic, unusual crying, poor appetite, ear infections or erratic sleeping habits can be signs of spinal distress. Pediatric adjustments are gentle. Knowing exactly where to adjust, the doctor applies no more pressure than you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato.
We accept most major insurances. To see if you have chiropractic benefits as part of your insurance plan, please call our office and we will be more than happy to check your benefits for you. Many people also find it convenient to log on to their insurance website for coverage information.
